Biography:
Cindy Mawle grew up amongst a playground of forests and beaches in the small Vancouver Island community of Sooke, B.C. Her adventurous, independent and determined nature as a child evolved into the driving force behind her creativity today.

A wonderful neighbor who took Cindy at 12 yrs old to oil painting classes, then the encouragement from a high school art teacher opened Cindy’s eyes to the world of art and set her forward on her path. For years Cindy collected art supplies in a wooden chest and practiced drawing, referring to art instruction books for direction.

In 1987, the poor B.C. economy pushed Cindy to move to Didsbury, Alberta. In 1993, when her daughter was six years of age, a few parents in the community prompted her to teach drawing and painting to their children, which eventually turned into nine years of instructing art classes. Initially Cindy taught small children to teens, then eventually adults, while working as an optician and raising her daughter.

Cindy supplements her self-taught journey with workshops facilitated by established artists. She chooses those artists by finding a particular “edge” in their work that she feels she can utilize for her own growth. Cindy has worked in pastel, watercolour, pen and ink, but acrylics have held her steadfast since 1995.

In 2009-2010 Cindy challenged herself to paint ’100 paintings in 100 days’, posting each day’s painting and blog on her website. The event was extremely successful, and her website now receives a multitude of hits every day.

Cindy has held solo exhibitions as well as participating in numerous juried shows in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island including the Sooke and Sidney Fine Art Shows. Cindy is a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Arrowsmith Chapter and is a resident artist at The Old School House Arts Centre, TOSH 10 studio in Qualicum Beach BC. She runs her own studio/gallery at 5320 West Island Highway, Qualicum Bay.

Her work can be found at Artfitterz Gallery and Framing in Nanaimo BC, and the Salish Sea Market in Bowser.

Artist’s Statement:

When I was asked the question, “why do you paint?” I used to answer “because I can’t help myself”. It was just a fact. I never really gave it much thought as to where that driving force was coming from. Recently I have come to the realization that I paint because I love the challenge. I thrive on overcoming the “conditioned doubts” I have at the beginning of any painting. I strive to paint how I feel when I view a subject, over and above the technical elements. My bio states “determined, adventurous and independent”. Determined to overcome, adventurous enough to try new techniques and independently striving to reinforce my own personal style.

 TESTIMONIALS:
"Taking a workshop with Cindy Mawle is the next best thing to having your own private tutor. Obviously, a gifted Artist, her small classes afford her the time to address the issues and needs of those in attendance. She has a variety of skills to share and does so with great patience. I learned a lot in her class and will be signing up for more. Gloria G, Parksville BC"

I did a half day work-shop with Cindy using watercolor and pen and ink...We worked plein air as we enjoyed a beautiful day! I found Cindy to be very helpful, enthusiastic, organized and positive!!! It`s impossible to end the day without taking away some of her energy and passion for one`s art!!!
I also recently completed the 2 day workshop with Cindy "Introduction to Acrylics"....It was just what I was looking for as I am new at acrylic painting..The class size was small which allowed for individual attention, and the studio was perfect with excellent natural and artificial lighting.I found Cindy to be very well organized and enthusiastic with her teaching. She provided us with print-out information which was very helpful and kept the class focused as she covered a great deal of material...It was the necessary catalyst for me to begin painting in acrylic with more confidence....Thank-you Cindy!! Joan R. Courtenay BC

I attended art classes with Cindy in Didsbury, Alberta for several seasons throughout my middle- and high-school years and consider her the strongest influence of my painting skills and style! Her unique viewpoint and lighthearted teaching style have lent me the tools to continue in my art career with confidence. Cindy explained things in a way that has stuck with me, personally, for almost 10 years...the simplicity and ’aha moment’ of just ’painting exactly what you see in front of you’ is my favorite example! I looked forward to every class I had with her—for the variety of styles and mediums, the encouragement to try new subjects and ideas, and for the easy-going, fun and ’safe’ learning atmosphere she brought to the class. I would sign up for her workshops in a second...if I didn’t have to buy a plane ticket to do it! Corinne M., Calgary AB
